Tomorrow People
Wellington based eight-piece Tomorrow People are purveyors of what they describe as 'sunshine reggae'. Focused on providing a mid-tempo sound that, while clearly reggae-centric, adds touches of dancehall ragga to its colour. It is a sound built around strong vocals, soothing harmonies, catchy hooks, aggressive ragga raps, and feel good riddims (rhythms).
Together, the 8-piece band of mixed descent (Maori/Pacific Island) have decades of experience in the music industry, citing previous careers in hip-hop, R&B, gospel, funk and soul. Taking their name from a Ziggy Marley song, Tomorrow People live up to the futuristic allusions it casts, having built their fanbase via Facebook and tracks uploaded to YouTube.
Predominantly marketing online has allowed the band to preview unreleased songs for their fan base, and they have had an overwhelming response to date. Their listenership picks up numbers by the day. 2011 sees the band record their debut album and hit the road to play shows nationwide.
Tomorrow People gather their musical influence from Jamaican and Hawaiian artists alike. Combined with their roots in NZ music, they bring a sound that is clean, laid-back and easy on the eardrums.
Tunes of I
Introducing the expansive neo-dub/roots/soul/psychedelia seven piece ensemble tunes of i, from New Zealand's capital city.
Born out of the famed New Zealand School of Music in 2011, the then three piece band has spent the last four years expanding their repertoire (and members) into a full seven piece ensemble. Featuring a solid backbone of drums, bass, vocals and guitars, and complemented by arguably one of Wellington's finest three piece horn sections, Tunes of I - or TOI as they are also known - is renowned around the country for their original, tight and refreshingly dynamic live performances.
After the release and tour of their EP T.O.I. in 2013, the band followed up with a win on NZ music voting website The Audience, securing them a $10 000 recording and video grant. A 25-date summer tour ensued, seeing them end in style supporting The Original Wailers on Bob Marley's 70th birthday in Wellington. This was closely followed by a show supporting Australia's Sticky Fingers to a sold out crowd at Wellington's James Cabaret.
The band is known for their on-stage dynamic, where their touring experience and Jazz School credentials force you to take notice. Not only is their musicianship and skill remarkable, but the solid musical and personal friendships between the members is obvious from the first note. Let them take you on a musical journey through a varied set performing their special blend of dub, roots, soul and psychedelic flavours, and watch as they unexpectedly swell into a singly, resonating entity where all seven members blend into one collective presence.
