The ToRi trio - soprano, piano and marimba- presents a program including Kakyoku, an art form where atmospheric Japanese poetry is set to a distinctive blend of western and Japanese music.

The history of Kakyoku started about 100 years ago, when European music was introduced to Japan. Composers found it challenging to fit Japanese lyrics to the Western style of music. Specially, the traditional Japanese poem, called ‘haiku’ or ‘waka’, is composed of ‘awkward’ phrases with 5 and 7 syllables. Composers shaped the melody and rhythms to fit in the intonations of Japanese Language, which lead to the originality of Japanese vocal works, Kakyoku.

Also on the program is the New Zealand premiere of an internationally awarded work by Jonathan Crehan, composer from New Plymouth, and further works by Miki, Purcell, Crumb, Regondi and Piazzolla.

The ToRi trio consists of Vienna-based Juri Hasegawa (soprano) and Yoko Takahashi (piano) as well as New Zealand based Yoshiko Tsuruta (marimba).
