In this visual presentation, experienced trampers and award-winning writers Shaun Barnett and Chris Maclean take us on a walk back in time.

Using rich imagery, the co-authors of Tramping – a New Zealand History will talk about how the recreational pursuit of striding into the wilderness all began.

They start by looking at how M¯aori and early Europeans lived in, and reacted to, the landscape and how the pragmatic walking of the 19th century laid the foundations for recreational tramping during the 20th.

The men, who first met at the 2000 Montana Book Awards, are both prize winners – Barnett for the co-authored Classic Tramping in New Zealand and Maclean for the historical work, Kapiti.
After the awards, their friendship developed through tramping trips and then came the book.

This session will be an invigorating look at tramping, without having to do it yourself!
