This month for Tuatara Open Late, City Gallery celebrates Matariki with Art Night, joining other late night events at galleries and museums across the region - Te Papa, The Dowse, Expressions, Mahara and Pataka.

We're kicking off at 4pm with an evening of food, music, beer, wine and of course, art. There'll be live music from Newtown Rocksteady and guests, and DJ B.lo playing upstairs. Osteria del Toro serving supper treats and a cash bar stocked with our favourite beverages from Tuatara, Seresin and Six Barrel Soda.

It's also another great chance to see our brand new upstairs exhibitions 'Demented Architecture' and 'Susan Te Kahurangi King and Shannon Te Au: From the One I Call My Own'. It's also the last chance to experience Candice Breitz after dark, it closes on 26 July.

Timetable for City Gallery:

4-10pm: Supper treats from Osteria del Toro, and cash bar

4-10pm: Art Night Buses - There will be one main circuit between Porirua (Pataka), Lower Hutt (the Dowse) and the CBD (City Gallery Wellington and Te Papa) with buses departing every 15 minutes in BOTH directions.*

4-8pm: DJ B.lo upstairs

8-9pm: Newtown Rocksteady play live

About the band - Comprised of highly active members of Wellington’s vibrant music scene, Newtown Rocksteady has a great depth of experience to call upon. Its members are involved in numerous other groups including The Nudge, Brockaflowersaurus-rex, Roy G and the Bivinators, Fly My Pretties, Bella Cajon, Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band and Zirigidum to name a few. The band has its roots firmly embedded in the traditions of Jamaican rocksteady, ska and reggae music and is further nourished by its connection with its community. Hailing from the Wellington suburb of Newtown, ‘Rocksteady’ as it is known to many of its fans, began its existence playing at community events and stonking house parties; as such the band is well-versed in the art of getting bodies on the dance floor.
