Sunday Free Concerts
September 27th

Imagine the Music
Imagine the music if Bhahms jammed with Brubeck, if Tchaikovsky raved with Thelonious Monk or Ravel wrote the score for Duke Ellington. Just imagine the intriguing music that would be created. Or perhaps you don’t need to imagine.

Te Takere’s free Sunday concert this month features the Chris Dann quintet. This group’s forte is taking a classical piece and re-interpreting the music into a jazz idiom. For instance Chris has re-written pieces such as Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” into a jazz framework allowing improvisation.
Says Dann, “We pick tunes that are well known and take the main theme, not necessarily the whole piece. It’s to get people re-thinking what they think they know”.

It’s an approach that relies upon the quality and skill of the musicians involved. With Chris Dann on piano, Nick van Dijk on trumpet and trombone, Anton Wuts on saxophone and clarinet, Nicky Wuts and vibraphone and Joanna Dann on cello, we have both fine musicians and a range of instruments. Anything is possible. Just imagine.
