Under the Wing Family Day
Family fun with bugs, birds and science…

Do your kids love bugs? Have you ever seen a native falcon up close? How about science? Have fun exploring them all, and lots more, at Rotorua Museum’s interactive family day on Saturday 10 October 2015 from 10am until 3pm.

Come and meet TV and radio personality 'Bugman' Ruud Kleinpaste as he hosts 'Bring a bug', and later join him on a walk discovering some of the unique critters at home in Government Gardens.

At 11am Wingspan Director Debbie Stewart will bring in an endangered kārearea (New Zealand falcon) and give a talk about these special native birds. And don’t miss the opportunity to view the new kārearea chicks, now at home in the hack box on the Museum’s roof, via the live video screen in our foyer.

Children can build paper planes and then test them out on our 'runway' to win prizes for furthest flight. At 1pm join Ryan Thomas from Air New Zealand for his talk about real planes and how they actually fly.

Become a bird watcher for the day, learning how to track a kārearea using telemetry radio receivers.

There are a host of other activities and events throughout the day including face painting, water testing, activity trails, and crafts. Dress up as your favourite bug, bird or scientist and you might win a spot prize!

Scheduled events:
10am: Walk on the Wild Side - a guided walk exploring the unique environment around Rotorua Museum. (Starting from Family Day Hub outside the Museum)
11am: Debbie Stewart from Wingspan and a kārearea (Museum classroom)
12pm: Bring a bug for Ruud to identify, and see some of his special bugs

1pm: Ryan Thomas from Air New Zealand - How planes fly. (Museum classroom)
2pm: Explore with Ruud – Join Ruud Kleinpaste as he explores Government Gardens, finding bugs, birds and more. (Starting from Family Day Hub outside the Museum)
