Thanks to the help of some fantastic volunteers this winter, we've planted over 4,000 shrubs and grasses since July, but we still need more help! We're on to the last push to help create habitats for the fabulous Duvaucel's Gecko.

This large endangered reptile is the largest gecko in New Zealand, living mainly on predator free offshore islands, and Rotoroa is lucky enough to be getting some within the next 12 months. To help ensure these special lizards, which grow up to 30cm in length, flourish on Rotoroa, we're creating their ideal habitats before they arrive. Which is where our trusty and very valued volunteers come in!

Volunteers not only get a great day out helping conservation in the Hauraki Gulf, they also get a 40% discount on their ferry ticket, taking the adult return price to $31.20. All you need to do is use the promotional code 360111 when booking online.

So pack your lunch and a change of clothes, and come join us for a special conservation experience. There'll be a free sausage sizzle and the chance to chat to our island staff and conservation team.

How to book:
360 Discovery Cruises are providing special discounted ferry fares for volunteers (only $31.20 return for adults). Numbers are limited to 20, so be quick and book online: select Auckland to Rotoroa return, and enter 360111 as a promotion code to get your special ferry fare, or call 360 Discovery on 0800 360 3472. Make sure you mention you are heading to the island for the volunteer day to get the discounted rate.

What to bring:
Your lunch and plenty of water to drink; sturdy footwear (tramping boots or good grip sand shoes - no open toe shoes); several layers of clothes and wet weather gear; gardening gloves and spade if you have them. Please bring any medication if you need it as there are no pharmacy supplies on the island (especially if you are an allergy or hay fever sufferer as you will be working among bush).

What we’ll provide:
Gloves and spades(if you don’t have any); plants; tea, coffee and water; sausages sizzle afterwards and supervisors with plenty of interesting stories and good humour!

Plan for the day
8:45am: Volunteers depart on the 360 Discovery Cruise;
10am: Arrive on Rotoroa, welcome introduction, safety briefing, plan for the day;
10:30am: Volunteer work begins (break for lunch, tea and coffee at 12:30);
3pm: Finish work and explore the island;
5:15pm: Return to Auckland on the 360 Discovery ferry.

Note: Not suitable for young children, those 8 years and older are welcome however they must be supervised.

Cancellations
While unlikely to cancel unless terrible weather, here’s how you can be sure it’s going ahead. Check our website or Facebook Page where we’ll post any updates. If you are unsure, please call 021 914384.

Supervision and guidance on the day will be provided by Rotoroa Island caretakers. A special thank you to 360 Discovery for providing a generous discount for our Volunteers.

We're keen to build a list of people who'd like to volunteer regularly or know about upcoming days, so if you fit this bill, then email us at info@rotoroa.org.nz, and put 'volunteer' in the subject heading.
