Ever wondered what New Zealand would be like if the South Island had been colonised by the French, and the North by the British? Award-winning playwright Dave Armstrong seeks to answer this question through his play, Le Sud. Directed by Brett Reid (in association with the Victoria University French Society), this multicultural political satire is utterly unapologetic, and utterly brilliant.

With their abundant tourist attractions and hydroelectric resources, Sud Zélande, led by a womanising Prime Minister, has been blessed with a booming economy to support their 30-hour working week. Across the strait, ex-British colony North Zealand struggles with Sud Zélande’s astronomical power prices, a Prime Minister who’s slumping in the polls, and escalating issues with local Māori tribes. The play begins as Sud Zélande prepares to play host to a North Zealand delegation in the opulent Chateau d’Infinité, Wanaka, to negotiate a more affordable power price from their wealthy neighbours. Prepare for two hours of comical manipulation, flirtations, and a huge dose of sexual innuendo.

Featuring countless crass politically-incorrect gags in a hilarious mélange of French, English, and Māori, this production will shock you, give you side-splitting laughter, and stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

To reflect the tri-cultural nature of Le Sud, the first 15 minutes of the play is in French. Even so, fluency is not required as the audience will still be able to pick up on the nuances of the language through what they see on stage.

The production will take place at Victoria University Memorial Theatre, Student Union Building, Kelburn Campus on Thursday the 14th and 21st of May 6:45pm and Saturday the 16th and 23rd of May 1:45pm. Entry is by Koha.

“Even though it takes the piss out of society, it makes us also believe in society, too.” - Dave Armstrong.
