Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga are thrilled to present a special programme of over 20 moving image excerpts made between 1910 and 2008.

We invite you to experience these taonga, which include some of the earliest surviving Ngāi Tahu films.

The programme is composed of home movie, newsreel, and television footage. Rare early images of gathering kai show muttonbirding on the Tītī Islands and eeling at Birdlings Flat. Among other historic footage, kaumatua Te Ari Pitama speaks at the commemorations at Kaiapoi Pā in 1931 and the 28th Māori Battalion is welcomed to Wellington in 1946. More recent clips include a 2006 documentary on the preservation of Māori rock drawings at Ōpihi and scenes at various Ngāi Tahu marae.

While the focus is on Ngāi Tahu, accompanying music clips from a range of Māori musicians and showbands will capture the spirit of these earlier times.
