An outstanding quartet of soloists has been engaged by the Waiheke Choral Society for their two performances of the Beethoven Mass in C Major, which will be performed at S Peter's Catholic Church on the weekend of July 25th and 26th from 2-3pm each day.

Soprano Milla Dickens and Tenor Dmitry Rusakov return having last sung here in the Mozart Great C Minor Mass and are joined by Waiheke's own Harriet Crampton and Bass Mark Covich, a newcomer to Waiheke. Anne Willman is the pianist for the performances, which will be ably led by musical director Richard Melville.

The Mass was composed in 1807 in response to a commission from Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, and was first performed that year at the Prince's palace at Eisenstadt. Parts of the Mass were performed in a massive concert in 1808, which also included premieres of four of Beethoven's major works including symphonies 5 and 6 and the 4th piano concerto.

Critic Michael Moore has written ”while it is often overshadowed by the immense Missa Solemnis written some 15 years later, it has a directness and an emotional content the latter work sometimes lacks,” and the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs forthrightly calls the work a long underrated masterpiece.

Tickets for the hour-long performance are $15 general, $10 concession and $25 family, and are available from choir members and from Shop the Rock, or you can ring Dee on 3456 to book.
