Scholarship Showcase
Waikanae Music Society Charitable Trust for Young Musicians.

2.30pm, Sunday 11 October Waikanae Memorial Hall

Since its inception in 2009, the Waikanae Music Society Charitable Trust for Young Musicians has awarded 21 scholarships to outstanding young New Zealand musicians. Already, some have returned as professionals to our concert stage and it is with great pride that we see these musicians developing and flourishing. They are the future of music in New Zealand.
The Showcase has a two-fold purpose – first, to give our audience a chance to enjoy the considerable talents of four of our scholarship winners, and secondly, to raise funds for future scholarships.

The Performers

Maria Mo (pictured) is a vastly experienced pianist and chamber musician. A graduate of Waikato University and the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität in Austria, she is studying for her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at the University of Auckland.
Gemma Lee (piano) has a Master of Music degree from the University of Auckland. She has just returned from the UK where, as the first Pettman/DARE Scholar in Music Education, she has held a 10-month placement with Opera North in Leeds.
Rafaella Garlick-Grice (piano) grew up on the Kapiti Coast and is currently an Artist Teacher and Accompanist at the New Zealand School of Music. A Masters graduate from Waikato University, she is now studying for a Doctor of Musical Arts.
Melanie Pinkney (violin) is by far our youngest scholarship recipient, described by Middle C reviewer Lindis Taylor as being “in the class of the musical prodigy”. At 13, Melanie is a seasoned performer, both as a soloist and chamber musician.
