The annual concert by musicians from the Conservatorium of Music of the University of Waikato is deservedly an audience favourite on the Whakatane Music Society’s calendar.

This year it once again features an amazing array of talented young musicians under the leadership of Katherine Austin, the Conservatorium’s Senior Lecturer in Piano / NZ Chamber Soloists / Concerts Co-ordinator. She is bringing:-

‘Quattro’ - the four-cello group again; featuring: Catherine Kwak (Brahms (Vienna) and Gisborne International Competitions major prize-winner aged 14 and 16); Sam Lucas (3rd in Gisborne International Instrumental Competition 2013 and 2014, aged 17 and 18); Alexander
Arai-Swale (principal double bass National Youth Orchestra 2013-15); and Jacky Siu (co-principal cello National Youth Orchestra 2014-15). ‘Quattro’ won the ROSL (Royal Overseas League) International Chamber Music Scholarship Competition at the end of last year and travel to the UK in July to play in London and Edinburgh.

There is also a return visit from the brilliant pianist - Rafaella Garlick Grice who came to Whakatane several years ago. She was an early winner of the ROSL International Chamber Music Scholarship Competition, and also came 2nd in the NZ Young Performer of the Year at the age of 17. She is studying now for her Doctorate in Music. She will play a selection of those fabulous miniatures - Chopin's much loved Preludes.

Also coming is violinist Britta Balzat, who was the winner of the 2014 University of Waikato Concerto Competition.

This concert usually plays to a full house so patrons are advised to get their tickets early from ‘The Good Life’ in the Strand, Whakatane (cash or cheque only). Otherwise an order can be emailed to (cheque or internet banking only) using an on-line booking form available on the Whakatane Music Society’s Facebook page. Ticket prices are: Adults $25, Groups of 6 or more $20 each, Whakatane Music Society Members $20, Children $5.

Further information is available on the Whakatane Music Society’s Facebook page, or by phoning Elizabeth on (07) 308 8661.
