The Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival, celebrate the beginning of the grape harvest season at ‘The Cliffs’ Riverside Reserve on the banks of the Ruamahunga River in the popular wine growing area of Dakins Road in Gladstone, is an event which is now regarded as an unmissable date on New Zealand's wine and food calendar.

While the site’s remoteness and vineyard setting is part of the site’s appeal, being only 10 minutes from both Masterton and Carterton means it is still close enough to public transport to make it very accessible to locals and visitors to the district alike.

Exhibitors operate from marquees set amongst the dozens of impressive 100 year old native trees which are a feature of the festival site, with a total of 27 exhibitors, representing Wairarapa’s finest wineries and high profile restaurants and food producers, showcasing their wares. Visitors to the Festival will have the opportunity to sample wines from not only the larger, better known wineries but also from some of the smaller boutique wineries in the region. In keeping with the informality of the event visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the wine makers from the vineyards involved giving them an insight into the wide variety and styles of wine available in the region.

The best of the Wairarapa is expected on the plate as well as in the glass with award winning chefs from high profile restaurants throughout the region preparing local specialities. Food and wine matches will be judged again this year by Ray McVinnie and John Saker, Cuisine Magazine’s respective Food and Wine editors, and in a Festival first in 2015 there will also be a ‘Peoples Choice’ Food and Wine match award. The standard is set pretty high already with some of the food and wine match highlights from the 2014 Festival including Bar Salute’s steamed dumplings of fresh Tora crayfish, bisque & basil buerre blanc matched with Urlar Pinot Gris, Wakelin House’s seared scallops with pea & wasabi puree matched with Paulownia Sauvignon Blanc, Gladstone Vineyard Café’s paua and black pudding pattie with tomato and cucumber salsa and lemon dressing matched with Gladstone Vineyard Pinot Noir and Clareville Bakery’s award winning lamb cutlet pie with braised lamb, Parkvale mushrooms, lemon kumara puree, finished with a whole lamb cutlet enclosed in puff pastry served with their famous tomato sauce matched with Schubert Marion’s Vineyard Pinot Noir.

Another first for the Harvest Festival in 2015 will be the introduction of a Local Emerging Artists music set at the beginning of the day featuring stand out performers from the recent Smokefree Rockquest. A variety of other bands will then entertain Festival goers throughout the rest of the afternoon.

Trade sites are also to be found amongst the food and wine marquees with arts, craft and jewellery on offer for those that want to take a break from socialising and enjoy a bit of shopping on the side!
Tranzit NZ will once again provide a regional shuttle service including servicing the scheduled train service out of Wellington making getting to and from the event easy, and there is plenty of free parking a short distance from the site itself with shuttle buses running to and from the carpark continually through the day. With only 2,000 tickets available demand for this iconic event is now very high with organisers expecting the event to sell out well in advance of the day.

The Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival is an occasion which not only celebrates the finest local wine and food but also the beautiful and diverse Wairarapa region.
