Waitangi 175
Be a part of our special programmes marking the 175th anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – the Treaty of Waitangi. Throughout the course of the year the Museum will be hosting a variety of other programmes that look at the history of New Zealand’s founding document and discuss its significance today.

Waitangi 175 - Gallery Trail
It has been 175 years since the signing of te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, which set the terms for a new relationship between Māori and the British Crown. The Treaty became the founding document of New Zealand and remains alive and vital today. The Treaty has a rich history beyond the signing place of Waitangi; copies were taken around the country to a variety of places, including Tamaki Makaurau Auckland.

Through a selection of objects on our ground floor we examine new aspects of the Treaty. Also, a pictorial display on the wall in Encounter Gallery shows various images of places where the Treaty was signed around Auckland.
Look out for the green signage in the Museum to explore the Treaty’s history and its relationship to us today.
