Established in 1978, the Wellington Media Collective came together under the banner “We Will Work With You, Not For You’. The cooperative of graphic designers, printers, photographers and their friends saw sharing their skills in graphic design and communication to political and community groups, artists and individuals across a spectrum of cultural issues and campaigns for social justice.

Over two decades, the Collective worked for mostly politically left-leaning causes, their clients ranging from trade unions to arts and activist organisations, with involvement in all the major political movements of the era, including the fight for a nuclear free New Zealand, tino rangatiratanga, womens’ rights, employment issues and an end to apartheid.

This retrospective exhibition examines the politics of style implicit in the Collective’s substantial body of graphic work, and through this lens, surveys a history of public culture in Wellington and New Zealand. The Collective’s graphic archives interweave a story of political activism with a cultural history of performance and art, both located against a changing economic environment, new networks of distribution and communication, and the technological shift from page to screen.
