The Wellington Southern Bays Historical Society is commemorating the centenary of Gallipoli by linking South Wellington’s people, places and objects in relation to World War I through a photographic exhibition.

The Historical Society have collected and produced images of local World War I memorials and will display them alongside storyboards and projects made by children from four local primary schools; Island Bay, Owhiro Bay, Houghton Bay and St. Francis de Sales.

A storyboard will be donated by the Home of Compassion featuring founder Suzanne Aubert. Mother Aubert was in Rome during World War I and worked for the Red Cross. The storyboards will include text from the Turnbull Library A Child’s War and Nelson Museum’s Dogs in War.

The Society is looking for material on two nurses whose names are engraved on the Island Bay Band Rotunda plaques, Vera H. Dawson and Christine M.L. Smith. If you have any information please e-mail Annette Moffat at

The Wellington Southern Bays Historical Society will be hosting the exhibition in the Island Bay Community Centre at the end of April.
