With a reputation for performance excellence at adult level, senior students from Palmerston North Boys' and Girls' High Schools will present this iconic story of love and hate for a nine performance season. Drawn originally from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical transforms the setting to the tough 1950s' back streets of New York where the local white gang, the Jets, bitterly oppose the influx onto their "turf" of immigrant Puerto Ricans and their gang, the Sharks. The cross-cultural relationship that flames between Maria (Sharks) and Tony (Jets) is the vehicle for putting under the microscope strong themes of racial intolerance and hope.

West Side Story follows on the heels of this company's highly acclaimed seasons of Guys and Dolls (2014), Whistle Down the Wind (Australasian Premiere 2013) and South Pacific (2012). This will be a highly energetic and intense production featuring some of the most talented young performing artists in the region. Orchestration is live and full and will fill this wonderfully acoustic auditorium with those soaring melodies of Leonard Bernstein that you may remember well including: Tonight, America, Something's Coming, Maria and I Feel Pretty.

Our dynamic cast of 59 has been in rehearsal since October and will do full justice to this challenging production.
