Wellington region’s former refugees will mark World Refugee Week this year with a Celebration of Communities and Cultures – and they invite everybody else to join them.
Groups from Porirua, Hutt and Wellington will gather at Rongotai College on Sunday May 14th from 1.00 to 5.00 to play soccer, eat ethnic food and watch cultural performances.

“The World Refugee Day event in Wellington in the past has been confined to refugees. We need to get local people to attend. We need to work towards exposing communities to each other,” says Changemakers Refugee Forum Board member, Chandra Binod Dahal.

World Refugee Day has been marked around the world in June since 2001. This year’s theme is Refugees are ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.
The Wellington celebration is being organised by Changemakers Refugee Forum in conjunction with New Zealand Red Cross, MCLaSS and Refugee Trauma Recovery.

We welcome the Wellington public to come along to Rongotai College on Sunday 14th June to enjoy this community event, which showcases the food, dances and music of people from Somalia, Columbia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Iraq.
