Having submitted three artworks to Art-x last year and sold one during the event, former journalist and erstwhile artist Franki James expected to be invited back this year. When that didn't happen, she decided to set up a one-woman exhibition at Creative Arts Napier (CAN) to display the three pictures she had prepared for this year. "Art is many things to many people," says Franki. "One of those things is to stimulate comment and discussion, something that my artworks most certainly did. But, obviously, they rattled some cages!" Similarly to last year, all three use controversial local issues as their theme. The owners of the original three works entitled "What White Elephants?", "Amalgamation - the Stuff of Knight Mayors" and "Nashville? Yes, Siree!' have kindly loaned them back for display with the new ones which depict The Horse of the Year 2015, The Ruataniwha Dam and the Hastings Opera House with any sales proceeds (less commission) to be donated to the Swannell's family's "Limitless Hope Emergency Shelter Appeal". Franki is hoping that X-tra - the Additional Art Exhibition & Sale will run in parallel to Art-x - the National Art Exhibition next year when, hopefully, she will be supported by other artists who have been excluded for whatever reason.
