The programme commemorates 60 years since the death of English composer Gerald Finzi. Finzi’s beautiful Prelude and Romance are miniature gems of the string repertoire, eclipsed only by the beauty of his Eclogue for piano and strings. We are delighted to have Michael Lawrence as soloist for this performance. The orchestra is also joined by baritone Joshua McGirr singing two songs, “The Birthnight” and “To a Poet a Thousand Years Hence”, both orchestrated by the orchestra’s conductor and lifelong Finzi addict Patrick Shepherd, Joshua will also be singing two more songs, “Childhood Among the Ferns” and “Epeisodia”, this time accompanied by Michael Lawrence.

Finzi’s love of the underdog accounts for the other works in the programme by Boyce and Wesley – he championed often-neglected scores be these and many other early English composers. Had he been in charge of today’s concert, I daresay Finzi would have chosen more of their works over his own!
