Join us at the Ahuriri Estuary, Humber Street Reserve, Pandora Pond, Ahuriri, Napier for a free Dog's Breakfast - for you and your dog!

Enjoy a BBQ sausage while you find out how dog walking and wildlife can successfully "share with care" the estuary environment. The Department of Conservation, Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Napier City Council and Enviroschools Hawke's Bay have combined to host this event to help dog walkers learn how to ensure walking your dog doesn't impact on the survival of our precious migratory birds such as the kuaka/godwit.

Hear Dr. Phil Battley from Massey University's Ecology Group talk about some of the migratory birds that use our estuaries. Dr. Battley's particular area of interest is how long-distance migration affects the biology and annual cycles of birds and the amazing flight of the kuaka/bar-tailed godwit. Kuaka/Bar-tailed godwits were the New Zealand Bird of the Year for 2015. They can fly about 12 000 km at one time – further than any other known bird.

The Napier City Council's Dog Control officer will explain the by-laws relating to dog control around the city and hear tips on handling your dog.

Spot prizes to be handed out at the event - Thanks to Purina. Dogs on a leash, please.

This event is part of Conservation Week 2016.
