As part of Taupo Museum's Out of the Archives exhibition and to tie in with the theme of caring for our treasures, we are providing a weekend of learning about conservation. Many people have personal or family treasures at home, for example, you might have grandad’s photos, your mother’s wedding dress, or a series of letters. We want to help everyone learn the latest advice and techniques to give their items the best care.

On Saturday 29 October, a professional conservator from the National Preservation Office will be doing a ‘speed dating’ style day. We ask the public to bring in their treasures to get a quick overview on how to best care for them. This will be a drop-in service, no bookings. Each person will get a set amount of time to discuss their object (depending on the demand of course), to avoid queues or unfair time distribution.

There will not be valuations, only care instructions.

On Sunday 30 October, we will be holding three 45 minute workshops designed for complete beginners and covering general conservation principles including handling, moving, cleaning and storing. These workshops should prove particularly useful for community groups with larger collections of materials (a few boxes as opposed to single items).

- 11am - Papers/letters – Carleen Dekarski (TDC Archives)
- 2pm - Photographs – Vicki-Anne Heikell (National Preservation Office)
- 3pm - Textiles – Claire Griffiths (Education Officer, Taupō Museum)

If you are interested in one of these Sunday workshops it would be helpful if you could please RSVP to the Museum on 07 3760414. The Taupo Museum shop also has a variety of conversation and object care products available for purchase.
