The New Zealand Junior Open is the only Squash New Zealand national junior event that does not sort players into age groups - it is seeded solely on grade. In 1950, boys began contesting the Panmure SC Cup, and from 1956 girls have played off for the Dr T C Childs Vase (Silver Tray since 2004).

The 2016 New Zealand Junior Open will be played at Whangarei Squash Club from 22-24 April. All players must be available to play from Midday on Friday 22 April. Players must be under 19 years of age as at the Last day of the event. Protective eyewear is compulsory for all players.

The event has been registered on the WSF World Junior Circuit, meaning players are eligible for world junior ranking points. As a World Junior Circuit event, players in the open draws need to register for a WSF SPIN number to be eligible to enter. These can be attained from the World Squash Federation website. Once a player has registered for a SPIN number, the number stays with them for life, and makes entering international events much easier. Registering for a SPIN number costs 10 pounds.
