Art suffers during times of armed conflict. It is destroyed, displaced, stolen and lost as war rages around it.

Sometimes art is returned after a conflict has passed, but it can remain lost, hidden or displaced, sometimes for many years or generations, sometimes forever. This course examines the history of art crime during periods of armed conflict, from classical antiquity, the Fourth Crusade, the Thirty Years’ War, the Napoleonic era, the First and Second World Wars, through to Iraq and Afghanistan.
