As summer is slowly approaching New Zealand’s shores, Bach Musica NZ says goodbye to the grey and stormy winter months with one of the most popular and dramatic requiems of all times.

Verdi premiered this Requiem himself as an obituary for a treasured and admired friend and poet. It was originally orchestrated for 100 instrumentalists with a 'modest' chorus of 120 voices, which later, on a tour that included London’s Royal Albert Hall, expanded to 1200 singers. Verdi loved to stretch the technical boundaries of classical composition as well as the accepted political and religious standards of the day, and this 'operatic' piece was no exception. It was regarded as controversial at the time. However, the reputation of the Messa da Requiem gained momentum and once it began to be performed in the most prestigious churches and theatres, all doubt vanished. This compositional milestone has proven to be more than a mere an ode to a friend. It is, as the music editor George Marek put it, 'a prayer for peace by a man who had devoted his music to conflict'.

Bach Musica NZ will be boosting its chorus to over 100 with guest singers from the National Youth Choir, the Graduate Choir, other solo professionals and the Hamilton Civic Choir. Its orchestra, enlarged to full symphony orchestra size, showcases no less than eight trumpets, a bass drum, tuba and piccolo part for effect.

The performance will be conducted by Rita Paczian with internationally renowned soloists Morag Atchison (soprano), Catrin Johnsson (mezzo), David Hamilton (tenor) and Joel Amosa (bass).
