The Christchurch City Choir, joined by Pandemonium Percussion presents Carmina Burana by Carl Orff (1895-1982) - one of the most famous and well-loved 20th century choral works. The choir is conducted by guest conductor Rupert D'Cruze, with soloists Morag Atchison (soprano) and Chalium Poppy (baritone, tenor and counter-tenor roles). The choir is also joined by two grand pianos played by Sarah Kang and Alison Holden, and by the Christchurch Boys’ Choir directed by Angus Simmons.

The text for Carmina Burana is based on a 13th century collection of medieval secular poetry, providing insights into the feelings and experiences of the people of the day. The songs cover a broad range of topics and emotions – from the warmth of the spring sun, to rousing drinking songs, yearning of parted lovers, and joyful abandonment to love’s consummation. The malevolent whirling wheel of Fate looms throughout.

Other items on the programme are Ney Rosauro's 1st Marimba Concerto and the first movement of Sonata for two pianos in D major K448 by Mozart.
