What is the one thing better than seeing the world’s best cellists perform solo works? Having them all perform on stage at the same time.

Over the past five years, the University of Waikato Cellophonics ensemble, under the direction of James Tennant, has developed a reputation for its enlivening performances of all kinds of works arranged for cello. To close the Waikato International Cello Fest 2016, Tennant is handing over the baton to “rock star” American cello professor Richard Aaron, who will lead the ensemble through a veritable feast of pieces: from Villa Lobos to Barber, Debussy to Rachmaninoff, Xu Tang to Piazzolla, and many more. The Cellophonics group, composed of Univesity of Waikato students past and present, will be joined by all of the festival’s international guests for one final gala celebration of music written for the cello.
