Mixed media artist Jackie Gray and photographer Baz Mantis chose The Incubator to be their exhibition space of choice as it largely compliments their own eclectic branding and avant garde appeal, and it is here that they will be displaying the collision of their two creative worlds in the aptly named Collider Scope.

The venue stands as a special landmark for both Jackie and Baz, a couple, as it was here the two met almost a year ago at an event which Baz was photographing (on the night before Halloween) and even on that fateful night they were discussing the potential to share an exhibition space and collaborate together on shared pieces, combining each other’s disciplines to create something uniquely their own.

This will be Mantis' first public exhibition and Jackie's second joint show, having also exhibited individual pieces in several local settings as well Oregon, USA where she won the top award for her piece.

Jackie's artistic journey began in Boston, Massachusetts over 25 years ago, commencing with an art class which changed her life and became a passion. A further series of workshops followed, which saw a degree of experimentation and self-directed learning. After a period creating realist paintings, she discovered a yearning to make her style more personalised and has never looked back since. Jackie received a recent honourable mention for a composition submitted at the 2016 Trustpower/TSA Supreme Arts Award, and it is following that exhibition that a number of new and larger compositions have been crafted exclusively for Collider Scope.

Photographer Baz Mantis has been active in his field for the past couple of years, having learned film based photographic techniques many years earlier and had put his creative focus on hold until this time, which also saw him turn to filmmaking, audio engineering and with his background in musicianship, involvement as a guitarist and music video producer with Tauranga hard rockers Ten Tonne Terror.

With leanings more towards the alternative in both his music and visual styles, Mantis tempts his audience with both abstract and familiar visuals, and is comfortable portraying what some would term “challenging subject matter” with dignity, yet still with a degree of mystery and allure.

As well as featuring their own works, the two artists are also rendering their own individual interpretations of one of the others exhibited works, which will be placed together during the show, and a TV screen will be showcasing a number of photos and videos from Baz and a back catalogue of paintings by Jackie.
