On the 16th November 2016, at 3pm, descendants of Cook Island soldiers who fought in World War One, dressed in historic uniforms, will march to Parliament for a ceremony to honour their tupuna. Parliament’s lawn will feature 100 crosses representing the Cook Islands soldiers.

Since 2013 a committee of Cook Islanders’ called Cook Islands Soldiers of World War One, in association with Cook Islands MPs Alfred Ngaro and Monokoapoto Williams have organized events to commemorate the contributions of over 500 men from the islands in the Cook Islands to New Zealand’s war effort during WW1. The march on the 16th November commemorates the 45 Cook Islands men who disembarked at Wellington in October 1915 and marched from Queens Wharf to Parliament.

There will be a small remembrance ceremony in front of the 100 crosses of Cook Islands soldiers. Following this everyone will proceed through security to witness the commemoration ceremony to be held in the Legislative Chamber. After a speech from the Right Hon David Carter and a Maori MP, a direct descendant of the first Maori MPs, there will be a presentation from the soldiers.

Following on from this everyone will then proceed to the Banquet Hall for further entertainment and speeches.

Tickets are limited, please contact Grace Hutton at for an official Invitation.
