Dare to Explore @ Central City Library

Kia Māia te Whai @ Ngā Whare Mātauranga o Tāmaki Makaurau

Are you a skilled code cracker, can you take word puzzles and make sense of them? Did you know that when someone sends you flowers each bloom means something? Can you find the hidden meanings in signs and symbols, or create hidden messages for your friends and family? This session is about codes, hieroglyphics, and rebus messages – and if you come along and join in then you can complete some of the challenges in your activity book! As this is writing and drawing activity we recommend the session for children over the age of 7, although younger children are welcome to take part if they are confident writers and illustrators.

Challenge Buster: This event will help you complete a Dare to Explore or Kia Māia te Whai challenge!

Top Secret:
* Dare to crack the code – complete the online code-breaker mission on the Auckland Libraries website or figure out one of the codes on page 20-21.
* Invent your own code and write your name or a secret message to someone.

Mysteries of the Arts:
* A long time ago, people used bunches of flowers to send secret messages to each other. Make up your own flower code on page 23 and draw or make a bouquet.

This session is aimed at children aged 7 to 13 years and their families.

Please note that children under the age of 14 must be accompanied to the Central City Library by a parent or other caregiver.

Dare to Explore @ Central City Library and Kia Māia te Whai @ Ngā Whare Mātauranga o Tāmaki Makaurau

Children aged 5 to 13 years can sign up for Auckland Libraries’ free summer reading adventure online and in library branches from Monday 7 December.

Dare to Explore and Kia Māia te Whai are about reading every day (even if it’s just a little bit) and completing fun new challenges.

Come along to the library for special holiday events and activities, or to share what you’re reading, creating and discovering. When you finish at least four challenges, you’ll be invited to a celebration party at the end of the summer holidays!

Once you’ve signed up, pick up your activity book from your local library and you’re ready to go!

The countdown is on for Dare to Explore 2015... can you unlock the secret?

Flexible * Fun * Friendly * Free!
