Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts is honoured to present an exhibition of ten recent paintings by Elka.

Dot’s Nice: Pointillism Paintings by Elka will feature in the gallery from 21st October through 12th November. Proceeds from the sales of these paintings will be donated to the Manawatu Cancer Society in memory of Elka’s late brother.

Elka’s vivid paintings find inspiration in the colourful mosaic work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, bright colours and decorative designs of Gustav Klimt, Andy Warhol’s popular culture portraits and the ‘dotting technique’ of Australian aboriginal art. While she has always loved drawing, Elka only started painting in 2015. This collection, her first public exhibition, illustrates a transition from geometrical shapes to the more fluid presence of human and animal forms.

Elka, originally from Barcelona, is a soil scientist currently living and working in Palmerston North. Like her adventurous ancestor Juan Sebastian Elkano, who she honours with her artist’s pseudonym, she has navigated the seas around the world from Northern Spain to Aotearoa.

As a scientist Elka travelled widely as a part of her studies and research; she and her family have lived in the Basque region of north-eastern Spain and in the Galicia region in north-western Spain as well as California before moving to New Zealand in 2009. “Today”, she says, “the green landscape of New Zealand is the perfect contrast for my newly found passion for colour!”

NB: Juan Sebastián Elcano (1476 – 4 August 1526) was a Spanish explorer of Basque origin who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth after Magellan’s death in the Philippines.
