"A consistently interesting video version of Biskind's book, which covers the period between Dennis Hopper's road movie – which marked the point where the old moguls lost the plot and handed over power and responsibility to a bunch of bearded movie nerds – and Scorsese's bloody 1980 fight film, described as ‘one last primal scream of defiance’.

There's enough detail in Biskind's book for a whole series, but this lengthy documentary, co-financed by the BBC and narrated by William H Macy, covers most bases in the battle between the artists/madmen and the suits. There are lots of pithy quotes, from Dennis Hopper's ‘I had final cut and cut my own throat’, relating to his drug-fuelled The Last Movie, to John Milius’s ‘Hollywood was a walled city. Coppola brought in the wooden horse.’

The sheer incomprehension from both sides of the battle are neatly summed up as Arthur Penn and Warren Beatty nervously attempted to explain the new wave-influenced Bonnie and Clyde to dinosaur studio boss Jack Warner as an homeage to the Warners' gangster films of the 40s. ‘

What an hommage?’ was his reply. This is not just a boys' club – Ellen Burstyn, Margot Kidder and Karen Black are among the perceptive interviewees, along with Paul Schrader, Richard Dreyfuss and many more." - Rob Mackie, The Guardian.
