Conducting Research In a Museum

This one day event provides the opportunity for students to learn more about how to conduct effective research using the Museum's resources. Students will hear directly from Auckland Museum and Te Papa staff as they share research which has been directly supported by primary source material.

Museum presenters
Three curators will talk about conducting research in a museum.

Gail Romano, Associate Curator, History at Auckland Museum: 'Entangled in the stories of two nations: a research case study'

Shaun Higgins, Curator, Pictorial at Auckland Museum: 'Photography and the Anzacs'

Kirstie Ross, Curator, History at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa: 'Holding onto home'

Breakout sessions
Students can also choose to take part in two breakout sessions during the day (please note that student's first choice may be unavailable due to popularity). The sessions are:

How to read an object
Exploring Auckland Museums documentary heritage collection
How to use theatre as a tool to unlock the story of an object
Guided tour of the Home Front exhibition

Gallipoli in Minecraft: How primary source material helped develop the building of a virtual world
Learning objectives:

Students will become familiar with Auckland Museum, and how to use its research facilities and online resources to aid NZQA achievement standards.

Students will learn how primary and secondary sources have been used to inform research, exhibitions and activities as part of the Auckland Museum WWI centenary programme.
Students will be exposed to staff and work of the museum, possible career paths in history.
