Enamelled Jewellery Taster Class

When:

Sat 29 Oct 2016, 10:00am–4:30pm

Where: Workspace Studios Ltd, 65 Abel Smith St, Wellington

Restrictions: R13

Enameling for jewellery is a fantastic way to apply beautiful coloured glass to a metal surface.

This one-day class is a simple introduction to this ancient craft, using a small electric kiln to fire the enamels to fuse them to the metal surface.

In this class, beginner students will use opaque enamels on copper, to create simple drop forms that may be strung easily on a chain or earring hooks. More advanced students who have done another enamels course prior to this will be using translucent enamels onto copper, and may choose to make enamelled elements that they can add into other jewellery projects in their own time, such as discs to set on a ring, or rivet into a necklace.

You will be shown how to prepare the enamel and the metal, how to apply it in layers and fire it. You will also be shown a few simple techniques such as scraffito, basic materials (copper and enamels) provided. Extra enamels, copper, and fine silver (for advanced students only) are available for purchase as well as chains and earrings findings.

This is just a taster class, students who wish to continue on with more advanced projects will be able to enroll in a block class for enamels running in early 2017.
