"Behind the Beltway".

Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell joins us to give off-the-cuff insights to how legislation is formed and the role public opinion plays in political decision making. He'll also share with the audience perspectives on what happens behind the scenes in Parliament and how the numbers game works under MMP.

First elected to Parliament as MP for Waiariki in 2005, Mr Flavell became the Māori Party co-leader in 2013 and was appointed as Minister for Māori Development and Associate Minister for Economic Development in 2014.

Born in Tokoroa, Mr Flavell (Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāpuhi) lives in Rotorua, where he worked as a teacher, school principal and lecturer for many years. He also served as CEO of a whare wānanga, and as a consultant to various government agencies.

Mr Flavell is well known for being a White Ribbon Ambassador (men campaigning against violence towards women) and competing in IronMāori triathlon events.

He holds a Master of Arts (Māori) from Waikato University and a Bachelor of Arts (Māori Studies and Anthropology) from the University of Auckland.
