In the past 20 years, television crime series from Sweden, Italy and France have challenged the American and British domination in the genre. Today, viewers have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of shows and an insight into foreign and exotic or exoticised locales. This course focuses on four successful television series, highlighting their stylistic peculiarity and different settings. They are: the Italian Romanzo criminale (Crime Story), the Swedish Crimes of Passion, the French Engrenages (Spiral) and the Argentinian Epitafios (Epitaphs).

Barbara Pezzotti has a PhD from Victoria University and is the author of The Importance of Place in Contemporary Italian Crime Fiction: A Bloody Journey (2012), Politics and Society in Italian Crime Fiction: An Historical Overview (2014) and Italy’s Past through Historical Crime Fiction, Films and TV Series: Murder in the Ages of Chaos (forthcoming, 2016).
