Fermented Friends-Matching Beer with Cheese
Great hand-crafted cider, beer, and artisan cheese, with their centuries-old traditions, have as much potential for perfect pairings with your favourite cheese as most wines. So how do they match up? Does a sharp cider go with a mellow cheddar or a Hawkes Bay IPA want a goaty companion. Join award-winning author and world cheese expert, Juliet Harbutt, at a tasting of some superb cheeses, some rarely found outside their region, and Hawke’s Bays finest ales and artisan ciders and discover some good, bad and outstanding matches. Not for those who think cider comes from a tin or cheese in strings!

Unlike wine the character of a cheese can be judged by a glance at its rind and an occasional squeeze. From this brief encounter, anyone can learn to recognise the basic character of a cheese from its texture and taste to its strength of flavour and even its maturity - reducing the vast array of cheeses now available into one of only 7 main types.

Using NZ artisan cheeses to demonstrate the 7 types [along with some excellent local wines] Juliet Harbutt, award-winning author, and world cheese expert, will ensure you leave with sufficient knowledge to impress friends and family or work behind a cheese counter
