Do institutions matter? And if so, how can we take better care of them? This speaker session brings together a range of voices to instigate and nurture a dialogue around the means and ends of institutions and bureaucracies. If bureaucracy is not (always) a dirty word, what other language and knowledge can we learn from institutional workers and participants that can help improve existing institutions both in Christchurch, and in our own lives?

This series of speakers will be followed by the launch of Freerange Vol. 11: Institutional Love. Both events share a proposition towards a more nuanced and caring approach to institutions.

This event is presented by Freerange Press as part of FESTA 2016.

FESTA is a vibrant weekend festival celebrating the unique urban environment of Christchurch and the creative urban regeneration that has emerged from it.

The theme for FESTA 2016 is ‘We Have the Means’, which focuses on citizen-initiated urban regeneration and sustainability through the reuse of waste materials in design. The ‘means’ we are celebrating includes both the people of Christchurch and visitors to the city, who care about the city’s development and flourishing, and the materials that we are able to repurpose and divert from landfill, which are then used to create functioning, beautiful and interesting objects for Christchurch.

Our headline event, Lean Means - a spectacular temporary city made from ‘waste’ materials, is set to attract thousands and is live for one night only on Saturday 22 October (rain date 23 October).
