Christine Liava’a is a retired secondary school teacher and an author who has been a genealogist for over 20 years, researching not only her own British and Channel Islands ancestry, but also that of her late husband, who was Tongan.

Realising that there was very little genealogical information readily available for any of the Pacific Islands, she started the Pacific Islands group of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, and began publishing lists of names of persons, in any circumstances, from different islands in the Pacific; and quarterly newsletters, now numbering 66.

The events and situations in the Pacific at the time of the First World War means various groups of soldiers came and went from the islands. These include both those who came to NZ and the ones who went to Australia and Britain. The French, Japanese, and American forces both from and within the area are also mentioned, as well as the many prisoners of war taken by roving German raiders.
