Create your own papier mâché catrina of Frida Kahlo with Artists Ruben Antonio Puertos Martínez and Rebecca Bewick at Te Manawa.

These beautiful statuettes are a popular decoration for Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and you will learn how to design, build and decorate your own Frida-inspired catrina using recycled materials.

This is a four part workshop exploring the culture and significance of Frida Kahlo, Mexican culture and their celebration of the afterlife.

Workshop 1: June 5, 11am - 2:30pm
Introduction to Frida Kahlo's life, loves, ideas and artworks and introduction to traditional papier mâché folk art in Mexican culture. You will begin creating your Frida form using wire, mixing glue and applying paper.

Workshop 2: June 12, 11am - 2:30pm
Part 2 - Frida Kahlo's life, loves, ideas and artworks and intro to traditional paper mache folk art in Mexican culture. Completing papier mâché form and building Frida's features, applying base coat of paint, decorating.

Workshop 3: June 19, 11am - 2:30pm
Part 3 - Frida Kahlo's life, loves, ideas and artworks and intro to traditional paper mache folk art in Mexican culture. Colour decorating, painting, adding features and costume.

Workshop 4: June 26, 11am - 2:30pm
Completing your Frida and her scene/ companions. Show and Tell.

You will need to bring your own pliers to this workshop to work with 14 gauge (2mm diameter) wire, and lunch each day. Tea and coffee is provided.

We also encourage you to visit the Arts Recycling Centre in Square Edge to source your decorations from their large range of recyclable materials.
