Waitakere Forest & Bird invites you to our Third Thursday Talk for November.

Our speaker, Richard Jakob-Hoff is passionate about wildlife conservation and is currently Conservation and Research Department manager, Auckland zoo. His love of animals manifested as soon as he could say the word ‘spider,’ his passion and later career in wildlife conservation were ignited when he was lucky enough to get a job working for his childhood hero, Gerald Durrell. As a young man, Gerald Durrell became an animal collector for zoos.

His most famous book “My Family and Other Animals” became a best seller and allowed him to turn his attention to wildlife conservation, something his travels had revealed was a pressing need. He wanted zoos to be net contributors to, rather than consumers of, wildlife. Little could he have suspected at the time how his influence would spread throughout the world. Always ahead of its time, the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust (now called the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust) continues to be a model that many other zoos, including Auckland, emulate.

In this talk, Richard will share some of his personal experiences with Gerald Durrell and his zoo and how this experience has influenced the direction of the subsequent 40+ years of his life.

All interested parties and non-members welcome, join us for supper afterwards. Koha appreciated to cover costs. For further information, contact Liz on 833 4145 or
