Discover the gothic and the paranormal among selected art works in Open Home and New Zealand Photography Collected during this strange and unusual evening.

Join photographer and paranormal investigator (and sceptic) James Gilberd and Te Papa’s Curator Modern Art Chelsea Nichols. Start with a short talk at Espresso cafe, then take a guided wander through the exhibitions.

Explore the curious histories of selected art works. Find out how to spot gothic elements in art works. See James demonstrate ghost-dispelling techniques using some of the strange contraptions you may have seen on television.

Pose with your group for a long-exposure photograph, taken by James on a Hasselblad SWC (super-wide camera) from the 1960s.

James Gilberd co-authored the book Spooked: Exploring the Paranormal in New Zealand (Random House New Zealand, 2011) and co-founded the New Zealand Strange Occurrences Society. James established Photospace Gallery in 1998 – at the time, New Zealand’s only gallery specialising in photography. James is a member of the New Zealand Sceptics Society.

Chelsea Nichols is Curator Modern Art at Te Papa. She researches the relationships between international and New Zealand modern art in the period 1900 to 1970. She’s particularly interested in the histories of collecting and museum display, especially the overlaps between art and other disciplines.
