Imagine a diverse continent with seemingly endless land in all directions, mountains, volcanoes, and canyons. Now imagine this same continent under the sea, and largely drowned - Welcome to Zealandia!

From a modern geological perspective, New Zealand and New Caledonia are considered to be the emergent parts of a sunken seventh continent named Zealandia. About half the size of Australia, Zealandia is 95% submerged beneath the sea.

Geologist Hamish Campbell will explain this idea in an illustrated talk about Zealandia: our continent revealed, a book he co-authored with fellow GNS Science geologist Nick Mortimer.

Hot Science - Cool Tales is a free series of talks run in conjunction with GNS Science.
