InterAct Disability Arts Festival returns again with an exciting array of free workshops and performances over three days. Auckland is proving itself one of the most diverse and inclusive cities with this festival, which brings even more, people each year to engage with music, visual arts, dance, craft and more on a grassroots level.

This year’s theme ‘Under the Sea’ and its programme bring together over 200 devoted performers to celebrate and contribute to one of the most vibrant events on the disability calendar. Signature events such as the entertaining Gala Night and colourful Wearable Arts Parade, combined with participation from new and returning artists make this years’ festival stronger than ever.

“InterAct Disability Arts Festival plays a significant part within the disabled community, bringing people together in a creative and inclusive space. I think this year’s programme really offers a taste of a wide variety of art practice; music, visual art, dance, craft and more.” - Paula Crimmens, Festival Director

The daytime workshop & performance programme continues to include some popular regulars such as Making a Film, Tape Art who do quirky murals and LEOteC (Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom) making sculptures from ‘found objects’. There’s Music - guitar & singing with Toi Ora, drumming with Chewy, Stefan’s Jazz Impro, and the BLENNZ band. There’s Dance – Catherine Chappell from Touch Compass, JDK Hip-Hop dancing, Tauranga Kapa Haka group, Wellington DaNZ, Pacifica Mommas Dancing, Singing and Storytelling, plus Jayno the Clown teaching clowning.

And there’s a whole heap of Art & Crafts to see and do: Badge-making, Mural painting, Puppet making with Anna Bailey, face-painting, jewellery-making, a novelty “Beach Scene” Polaroid photo opportunity, an art exhibition with works on over 50 display stands, and a digital artist who will be creating an artwork on screen while you watch.

The Gala Performance on Thursday 20th Oct at 7pm headlines with Emma Bennison, a singer-songwriter from Australia.

She specialises in ‘a capella’ singing, and arranges and conducts choral works, while also being CEO of Arts Access Australia. Blogger, comedian and author, Thane Pullan – the Grumpy Cripple – will be performing his acclaimed stand-up/sit-down routine. Touch Compass, NZ’s only professional inclusive dance company will be dancing. They specialise in aerial work/dance theatre/contact improvisation.

Plus two bands: Johnny Matteson & the Side Effects and the Mutes from Mars will be providing their own eclectic mix of musical entertainment.
