Brahms and Gershwin

Songs by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Ture Rangström, Edvard Grieg, Wilhelm Stenhammar, Kurt Weill, George Gershwin

Catrin Johnsson, mezzo
Rachel Fuller, piano
Edith Salzmann, cello

Acclaimed Swedish mezzo-soprano Catrin Johnsson comes to us direct from the opera houses of Europe to perform songs together with highly sought-after pianist Rachel Fuller, recently returned to New Zealand after many years performing in the UK, Scandinavia and across Europe. The pair present a riveting selection of songs about love, life, nature, modern woes and everything in between: as Grieg did for Norway, so the late romantic composers Rangström and Stenhammar captured the melancholic beauty of Johnsson’s native Sweden, while the finesse and deeply emotional artistry of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms reflect the poetic ardour of the Classical and Romantic age. With their gnarly use of jazz harmonies and cabaret theatricality, Kurt Weill and George Gershwin wrench us into the twentieth century, spinning tales of the lush life and the harsh life, the bad times and the good times.
