Old worlds meet new in this programme of music from a time on the cusp of change. The virtuosic opulence of Fitzenhagen’s Valse for cello quartet recalls the luxurious lifestyles of the belle epoque at the end of the 1800s while Astor Piazolla’s tangos take us to the gritty frontiers of colonial South America. Replete with rich harmonies and appealing melodies, the Serenade for String Trio by the Hungarian composer Erno von Dohnanyi is a dramatic and absorbing expression of late romanticism that also looks forward to the kaleidoscopic palette of modernism that would steer the twentieth century into so many exciting directions. Songs both beautiful and imaginative from beyond the bounds of mainland Europe – Sweden, America and New Zealand – round off this concert of diverse and fascinating music.
