The Auckland Cellists

This is a rare opportunity to bask in the mellifluous sonorities of twelve cellos, heard at their warmest and richest in the glowing harmonies of Klengel’s “Hymnus”. An equally powerful and lush combination is the string sextet, and this concert presents one of the best works ever written for that ensemble. Tchaikovsky began work on his string sextet when he was visiting the Italian art mecca of Florence. Such was the impression of his visit that he called the piece “Souvenir de Florence”. It is a dramatic and emotional piece that plunges you in its world of D-minor intensity from the very first chord. Some of New Zealand’s most outstanding young string players join forces with festival tutors to bring you these treasures, charmingly supplemented by one of Haydn’s most delightful string quartets as well as a range of songs including Bizet’s beloved “Habanera”.
