The Julie Mason Trio features three of New Zealand’s finest and best known jazz musicians. The bandleader is one of N.Z’s foremost women in jazz, pianist and vocalist Julie Mason. Julie has performed at all the major jazz and arts festivals in New Zealand, as well as festivals and jazz clubs in Australia, the Pacific Islands, and top European cities Paris, Berlin, and London. She has also toured the U.S. and Canada.

Julie currently has a residency at One2One Café on Auckland’s Ponsonby road, with her group and special invited guests. She has just recently recorded her 6th album Layers of Disguise, which was formally released on Tuesday 3rd May, at the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club.

Julie’s long-standing bassist is Italian Alberto Santarelli, who has both studied with, and worked with top jazz musicians the world over. Legendary jazz drummer Frank Gibson completes the line-up, and he has played with such luminaries as Diana Krall, Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden, Sonny Stitt and many, many others throughout the globe.

Special guests will include Phil Broadhurst (piano). Phil was the recent winner of the Jazz Album of the Year Award for his most recent album Panacea. He was the first NZ jazz musician to receive the NZSM for services to jazz. As pianist/composer/arranger/ broadcaster, he is one of this country’s best-known jazz musicians.

The other guests are Mike Booth, one of NZ’s finest trumpet players and Stephen Morton Jones on alto sax. Stephen completed his B.Mus (honours) degree in jazz at the New Zealand School of Music’s Albany (Massey) campus.

Julie and her group will be performing a selection of material from the new, hot-off-the-press album Layers of Disguise, which features the music of jazz pianists such as Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Alan Broadbent and Herbie Hancock along with works by other great jazz artists including Coltrane & Cannonball. The emphasis is on vocalised jazz standards. She may also play an original or two from her back catalogue.

Every Wednesday CJC presents a featured member artist or international guest. We are currently located in the basement bar at The Albion Hotel, 119 Hobson St until further notice - please check the website for changes.
