Part of Auckland Live Summer in the Square.

Kai Auckland is a movement for all Aucklanders that aims to create a more equitable, sustainable and localised food system. Pick up some tips and tricks on growing food locally, improving access to good food, and sharing their knowledge.

This activity is free with limited capacity.
Bookings are essential, and open on Monday 21 November. Stay tuned for terms and conditions.

- 3 December – Plant the Gardens:
Get your hands dirty with Kai Auckland, helping plant pallet vegetable gardens. Decorate your own garden tag to identify what you’ve planted. A variety of summer vegetables, herbs and flowers will be planted and grown in Aotea Square for the summer. Kai Auckland volunteers will be on hand to help with planting and sharing tips for growing summer crops at home.

- 10 December – Setting up an Organic Edible Garden:
A Kings Plant Barn garden expert will show you how to get set up for successfully growing your own organic vegetables. Learn what it takes to create healthy soil as the foundation for your vegetable garden.

- 17 December – Microgreens and Sprouts:
Homer Xu will cover how to grow delicious superfoods at home year-round, no matter how small your space. Sprouts and microgreens are packed with nutrition and simple to grow. Bring your own container and take home a tiny garden - suitable containers include plastic cherry tomato or ice cream containers, or shallow cardboard boxes, such as copy paper carton lids and shoe boxes.

- 14 January - Growing Fruit Trees in the City:
A Kings Plant Barn garden expert will share top tips for growing fruit trees in Auckland. Find out which varieties you can grow in small urban gardens, how to care for them, how and when to prune, and how you can get the most fruit out of limited space

- 21 January – Growing Food in a Small Space:
Growing food in small spaces and containers comes with its own set of challenges. Paul Crowhurst brings many years of experience working with plants to help you get set up for success. This workshop will cover soils and other growing media, organic and inorganic fertilising options, how to control pests without compromising your own health, which types of plants do best in small spaces, and when to plant them.

- 28 January – Upcycled Garden Creations:
Transform stuff that would otherwise go to waste into unique garden-themed creations - perfect for gifts or for your own garden. Buffie Mawhinney from Funk Up My Junk will show you how to make a junk wind chime (suitable for anyone old enough to tie knots), or turn an old jar into a garden light (suitable for all ages).
