Wellington-based Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are bringing their own brand of the blues live back to Hamilton, they'll be celebrating their new album release 'Live at VK's'.

Collins, who is known for being an energetic front woman, likes to move between ballsy blues and soulful ballads, making them her own. She says "I'm really happy that the album has caught what I love about this band - the enormous fun and energy we have when we're playing."

At the Nivara Lounge on 17th November you'll no doubt hear Nina Simone, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Laura's take on some unsuspecting men, Bill Withers and BB King amongst them.

Laura says "Blues comes straight from the heart and that’s just how I like it, it’s accessible, joyful, heart full music and not only that it makes me want to move – what’s not to like?”

Laura's band are all long time players in the Wellington and National music scene.

Wayne Mason, a well-known singer-songwriter, is also one hell of a fine boogie piano player and we’re lucky enough to have him ‘firing it up’ on our behalf. Think Fats Domino, think Dr John, think Professor Longhair and you’ll be in the right honky tonk.

On guitar John O’Connor is making it sing, a man of long time fame in the Wellington music scene (he's worked with Kiri Te Kanawa, Mark Williams, BB King, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley). He’s a pedal free man, it’s all in his fingers – just masterful.

In the engine room, George Barris on upright bass (in his early days part of ‘Highway) is joined by Pete Cogswell on the ‘back porch’ drums. “Having a pulled back rhythm section just allows us to be lower volume and bring a really warm vocal led sound. We’ll still make you want to dance, though, this band just swings. Head down to the Nivara Lounge, if you love it 'live'!"
